Edgy Dhoni misses Tendulkar
Posted by Rajan Bala on 16 Aug 2008
India's ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has indicated that he would miss the injured Sachin Tendulkar, more as an advisor, during the five-match series against Sri Lanka. He had the option to ask for another senior player, one of two former captains, Saurav Ganguly or Rahul Dravid, both of whom have scored in excess of 10,000 runs in this form of the game. But he did not. Continue Reading

Why the rush to cheap?
Posted by Bala Murali Krishna on 1 Aug 2008
The $10 laptop has come and gone. I mean news about it, not the real thing. But the "news" was so powerful, it led many across the world to seriously believe the land of the cheap might actually do something like that. After all, had the world not been shown the $2,500 Nano, the world’s cheapest car? Continue Reading

HYDERABAD CALLING
Shadowy 'traffic' signs!
Posted by Ali Bin Abdulla on 23 Jul 2008
After rendering homeless hundreds of sex workers eking out a living at Mehboob Ki Mehndi, the red light area in Hyderabad's Old City way back in 1996, Hyderabadi cops seem to have realized that even those who indulge in flesh trade are a part of our democracy. Not surprisingly, the world's oldest profession is thriving in the tri-cities of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Cyberabad, albeit in a different way from the days of yore. Continue Reading

Strange stint of Agent Ric!
Posted by Sandip Gopal on 17 Jul 2008
The reasons for a resignation, whether you are the technical advisor of a once-resplendent but now struggling side like India or a journalist trying to thwart the strangleholds of his despotic editors, are by no means impetuous. It is a well thought-out decision, perhaps an explosion of your bottled frustrations. The reasons cited in Ric Charlesworth’s resignation letter — salary arrears, unrealistic expectations and inadequate working conditions — are strange, though not to be discounted. Continue Reading

Why this fuel crisis?
Posted by Babu Jayakumar on 2 Jul 2008
Hell broke loose on the streets of Chennai on Monday and Tuesday. And perhaps for the first time police personnel were deployed at each and every petrol filling station in the city. Not just to regulate the vehicles in the pumps that were open – with long queues of vehicles outside causing traffic snarls – but also to shoo away motorists from those stations that had closed and put out ‘no stock’ boards. No go, girl!
Posted by Ranjitha Gunasekaran on 11 Jun 2008
Over the past 10 years, Chennai appears to have changed the way it views its women. The controversial journey began when something with a flippant name like "eve teasing" – something women across India suffer on a daily basis – led to the death of a young girl. Continue Reading

Do we really love our cricketers?
Posted by Pavitra Srivatsan on 7 Jun 2008
I came across an interesting comment the other day. Scouring the net for anything 'new' on the Indian Premier League, I read a piece by Dileep Premachandran, in which he attributes a comment to former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar caught my eye. Of all the opinions I read on cricket everyday, this one kept playing around in my head. Premachandran quoted Manjrekar as saying: “It’s a big myth that Indians love cricket. They love Indian cricket, and cricketers.” Continue Reading
